HIGH POINT, North Carolina, June 21, 2022 – High Point University students from the Earl N. Phillips School of Business traveled to Spain for a “Maymester” trip, exploring the country’s marketing and culture.
Dr. Miguel Sahagun, associate professor of marketing, led the four-week trip. The HPU Marketing class in Spain visited Salamanca, San Sebastian, University of Salamanca, Segovia, Seville and other cities.
HPU’s “Global Experience” and “Maymester” programs are short-term study abroad opportunities for HPU students to travel across the United States and abroad to learn about different cultures through experiences of real world. This year’s faculty-led study abroad trips allowed nearly 150 students to explore and connect with different people around the world and in the United States throughout May. Study abroad experiences included trips to London, Italy, Ecuador, Spain, Germany, France and the Netherlands.
During the trip, students visited Spanish landmarks, participated in marketing courses at a local university, had an experiential learning opportunity cooking authentic dishes like paella and gazpacho, visited the Iberian ham factory and presented their final marketing business plans at the culmination of the trip. .
“My experience during this Maymester program is something I will never forget,” said Elana Kaminsky, a senior from Long Island, New York. “I was able to see parts of Spain I would never imagine myself going to. I also learned a lot in the course we took. It was an overall amazing experience.
One of the activities in Spain included a stop at the Parque Cientifico of a local university. This is where the university helps entrepreneurs start their business, supports projects that stimulate local development and innovation, and fosters research in multiple fields.
“There are many ways to experience a new culture, but nothing compares to the experience of being completely immersed in it,” Sahagun said. “That’s what studying abroad provides.”
The HPU Marketing class in Spain returned to the United States in early June.
