VICENZA, Italy — For a soldier in the U.S. Army, a passion for community service and risk-taking was the motivation to serve in the military and achieve important milestones in his personal development.
SPC. Sherry Lewis said she joined the military for the opportunity to better serve her community and pay for her college education and added that she also wanted to show young women that they can do whatever they want. want.
“I’ve always wanted to lead by example,” Lewis said. “I want to inspire and show others that there is always a way to success if you work hard enough.”
Lewis is the first woman in her family to serve in the military. The Dinwiddie, Va. native also earned several degrees, including a master’s degree in science and sports management from Virginia State University, making her the first female college graduate in her family. Additionally, she is a former women’s semi-professional soccer player for the Richmond Black Widows of the Women’s Football Alliance.
Lewis is currently serving in Italy on a tour of duty as a Transportation Management Specialist with the 679th Movement Control Team. In her civilian career, she works as a Recreation Instructor for the City of Richmond Parks and Recreation Department. Lewis helps organize after-school health and wellness events and is working on a new outreach program for young women in her community.
For Lewis, serving in the military was a meaningful way to give back to his community and provided opportunities in his personal life. She encouraged those interested in taking the leap of service to pursue it and take advantage of the opportunities the military has to offer.
“Don’t be afraid to raise your hand because that leap of faith can take you anywhere,” Lewis said.
