The people of the Hudson Valley are devastated after the sudden and permanent closure of a very popular restaurant after 27 years.
On Monday, the owners of Little Italy in Costagliola, just off Broadway in the town of Newburgh, announced that they were closing their doors for good.
“The Costagliola family would like to announce that we are about to start a new chapter in our lives. This is a bittersweet time for us. We will close our doors after 27 years of service to the Hudson Valley,” the owners wrote. on Facebook.
The Italian restaurant, located at 121 Washington Terrance, opened in January 1995. Many considered it a hidden gem in Newburgh. Most of those who dined there said it was the best Italian food they have ever had.
“We have enjoyed every meal at your restaurant since you opened,” Dianne Haase wrote on Facebook. “Absolutely the best Italian food in the world !! You have always been so gracious to everyone and, although we will miss you very much, we wish you lots of happiness and rest in your retirement !!”
On a personal note, Costagliola’s was my absolute favorite restaurant. I’ve spent every birthday I can remember eating delicious Italian food that reminded me of my grandmother’s cooking in her Brooklyn kitchen.
Countless friends in the Newburgh area considered it their favorite restaurant as well. A friend from high school summed up the fence best.
“To say it’s devastating is an understatement. It has changed my life. I don’t think you realize the impact Costagliola has on how I judge other restaurants’ attempts at Italian,” a commented Pat Nunnari.
Sadly, the owners didn’t give loyal customers a chance to say goodbye as the Facebook post was officially shutting down.
“I feel like I’m losing friends,” wrote Ellen F Witaker. “There will never be a restaurant that feels more like home, but better, than the one in Costaglio. Good luck in the future.”
The owners thanked guests for 27 years of friendship.
“First and foremost, we would like to thank you for your loyalty and your activity since we opened our doors in January 1995. We are grateful for all the good friends we have made over the years”, have writes the owners. “We would like to thank you once again for your patronage and support.”
